Kittens Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control

Welcome to the Humane Society of Whitley County!

What began as a dream in 1998 for longtime Whitley County resident Emily Deutsch and local veterinarian Dr. Don Richey has become a magnificent reality! With help from several concerned citizens, the Humane Society of Whitley County opened its new animal shelter and adoption center in August of 2004.

Our Adoption Process
Get Prepared

Stop in or check out our adoptable animals online, but have an idea of what you're looking for. Cat or dog? Big or small? The options are endless so have an idea in your head so we can guide you to a perfect match.

Apply and Meet

Fill out an application and interact with any of the candidates you are interested in. We recommend that all family members interact with your new potential pet.

Meet and Greet

Found the one you love? Give us 1-2 business days to get your application approved and then we will set up a dog to dog meet and greet with your current pets to make sure everyone gets along.

Take Home

Meet and greet went well, take home the same day! If you don't have other pets and don't need a meet and greet, take home as soon as your application is worked through!

We recently adopted Tessa and everyone was extremely helpful during the entire adoption process, making sure that we knew every little detail about her and making sure that our 2 other dogs and her were a perfect match. Thank you to everyone that had entered Tessa's life, I am thankful for all of you.

Victoria

We surprised our princess with a kitten for Christmas. She absolutely adores him! The ladies at the shelter helped answer all of my MANY questions and made the process quick and easy. Thank you! Frank (formerly known as Iago) is loving his new home!

Carlee

We adopted our puppy, Hope (formerly Oreo) from WCHS. As the owner of a doggy daycare and boarding facility, I have the opportunity to work with several rescues and humane societies. I am impressed by the professionalism and organization of the adoption process. Our Hope was rescued and fostered during her most formative time. She is a well-adjusted, happy and confident little dog and a joy.

Kathy

Filled out an app on Thursday and brought home our little guy Atlas (previously Oscar) on Friday. The shelter was very clean and the staff was kind and knowledgeable. If we are ever adopting in the future, this will be the first place we look.

Kendra

We adopted our Rottweiler, Irish, from HSWC. They were great to work with. They followed up quickly with answers to questions and inquiries, and they were super friendly. We'd definitely adopt from them again.
